If you want to make a lot of PCBs using SMT technique, its key to use reflowing instead of soldering - so that the entire board is 'soldered' at once. But to do that you'll need to deposit paste precisely on the pads.
If you ever decide to make a few hundred boards especially those with very fine pitch type parts (say 0.4 or 0.5mm pitch) it may be time to move to a framed stencil!
Framed vs Unframed
The 1 key benefit of framed stencils is that they are 'pre-stretched'. Especially with large PCB panels, having the stencil-board-alignment off by even a mm can cause bridges or opens. With DIY stencils, alignment is a pain and takes care by the operator for each pass.

A2: The solder paste layer pads should be approximately 10% smaller than the SMT pads.
Q3: What is the difference between a solder mask Gerber file and a solder paste Gerber file?
A3: The solder mask Gerber file has all of the mask openings including surface mount, component holes, and vias. The solder paste file only has the surface mount pads.
Q4: What is squeegee view when use SMT Stencil?
A4: The squeegee view refers to the side of the board that paste is to be applied to. If you are looking at the image, and that is the side you want to apply paste to, that is the squeegee view.
Q5: What guidelines should follow to specify the correct thickness of a SMT stencil when using 0402 components?
A5: Stencil thickness is determined by the desired paste height. Typically, the paste height is 1 mil less than the stencil thickness. For example, 0.006'' thick stencil would deposit 0.005'' paste height. So please choose the thickness according to the desired paste height.
Q6: What else can I use to clean the SMT stencils besides stencil wipes?
A6: We recommend using IPA to clean stencils. It should be electronic grade IPA at 99%.
