A variation of côte d'Ivoire's Deanglé African mask, this sculpted face features a sunken look enhanced by a sculpted wolf coated in kaolin. The mouth is classically protruding. A grainy aggregate remains at the top of a metal hook on either side. A beard extended the chin. Smooth patina slightly satiny. Dan masks, of varied design, usually perform at very theatrical entertainment parties where women play a leading role. The mask called "moqueur" called Deanglé defines an ideal of beauty and benevolence because it is carved in honor of young girls of the village orfamous men. Also used in circumcision rites, they appearin the company of and large masks go ge relating to the society go, which exercises justice and maintains peace. Fly, dan masks also have the distinction of being not representations of spirits of the bush but in fact being the embodiment of them. The Dan live in western Côte d'Ivoire, but also in Liberia. Also known as Yacouba, they have a powerful initiation society, that of the Leopard. Dan Krans living in the southern part of Dan produce more triangular masks with side fins.
