Songye Kifwebe Mask with Beard Leather Congo African Art-66.5/19.2 CM
The present mask belongs to the most famous Matsuno mask, called Kifwebe, made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. "Kifwebe" means "mask" in Matsuba. This is a female figure, which can be identified by the lack of a central badge. . According to Hersak (1985:168), "The striped mask or kifwebe is used by members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society as traditional agents and authority figures, by performing masks in society into three types: two for men and one for women. Species. Male masks have a striped pattern of three colours, while female masks are predominantly white with facial features predominantly black and some red. The kifwebe tradition also exists in Luba and appears to have originated in the Luba/Songe mix in the southern part of the Eastern Chieftains Region. Songye confirms this origin by interpreting the kifwebe stripes (in addition to the zebra), an aggressive antelope that inhabits the region."
