    from the Congolese community. First, a sculptor shaped the figure into an empty vessel. The second expert, known as Nganga, then "fortified" the vessel by inserting bilongo (a medicine made up of a secret combination of animals, plants and minerals) at key points to create a power map or nkisi. A body-wrapped nkisi (called nkisi nkondi) is used in nganga ceremonies for the benefit of society, maintaining law and order by punishing those who disturb the life of the community. Each piece of metal serves as a permanent physical record of events, as well as a deterrent to future crime.
