This is a fine variation of the Punu mask. It is an exceptional mask because of the quality of the carving. There is a traditional Kaolin pigment on this mask leaving it a natural color reserved for the judgement mask. This mask also features highlights such as the lips, scarification (keloids) and eyebrows painted in red pigment . The Mukudj mask and dance is performed on stilts and the mask has become a national icon of Gabon. The Punu people live along the upper Ngoumie River in the central African country of Gabon.
