AFRICAN single handcrafted piece of wood Ifugao Tribal Bulul Rice god Figures-22.6/8.5 CM
Living on the left bank of the Bénué River, the Mumuye live from agriculture in a region of high plains dotted with mountainous and rocky islets. It is moreover on the outskirts of these natural foothills that, in an old defensive concern vis-à-vis the Fulani, their villages generally settled. They are organized in groups families, called dola, comprising five to fifteen households. In this set, an isolated box is reserved for statues, iagalanga, while another, also sacred, java, is occupied by an influential member of the family. The latter has most often magico-religious powers than the sculptures, whose responsibility entrusted to him, reinforce while increasing the social prestige of their guardian. Mumuye sculptures represent a tutelary spirit, rather than an ancestor, they among other things, were supposed to watch over the well-being of individuals and families.
