African Tribal Face Mask Wood Hand Carved Wall Hang Lega Mask Bwami Society-46/17.7 CM
The Laiga people live on the banks of the Lualaba River at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika and are also known as the Varegas. They live in small villages with no central authority and govern themselves through a community association called "Bwami". This association is made up of male and female members who strive to rise through the various levels of bwami. For Lega, the ultimate goal is to reach the highest level of "bwami" by becoming a "kindi", a person who exercises moral influence in society. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and progression in bwami uses masks and graphics to record the various levels of bwami and serve as badges to confirm the enlightener's knowledge of the mysteries and levels of bwami. Initiates are given the privilege of wearing and displaying masks, which can be worn on their arms or faces, or simply displayed on a shelf or on the floor.
