French African tribal art mask collection. An elaborate structure, based on basketry lined with textiles, carries a single circular plate framed by antennae for this mask of the northern Yaka. The Zombo also used similar masks carved by the Yaka mask . Initiates could wear these single-platform mask that appeared in pairs. Very beautiful locally abraded grainy polychromy. Initiation songs accompanied the appearance of the African Yaka mask which integrates the category of highranking mask thanks to its stepped headdress. Their design aroused the creativity of the sculptors whom the chiefs rewarded for their talent. Hierarchical and authoritarian, made up of formidable warriors, Yaka society was governed by lineage leaders with the right to life and death over their subjects. Hunting and the prestige that results from it are nowadays an opportunity for the Yaka to invoke the ancestors and to resort to rituals using charms linked to the "khosi" institution. The Youth Initiation Society is then-khanda , which is found among the eastern Kongo (Chokwe, Luba, etc.), and which employs various charms and mask in order to ensure a vigorous lineage.
