African Tribal War Mask, Hand Carved Wall Hanging. Solid Ironwood-Detailed /MINT

$ 118.8

Availability: 83 in stock
  • Culture: African
  • Condition: EXCELLENT CONDITION THROUGHOUT. Measures: 15 7/8 inches in height, by 7 inches in width, and 2 1/8 inches (proud of the wall). The finish is excellent, as are the hand carved details. African Ironwood and Ebony have many of the same characteristics. It could be either species of wood, but I believe it is most likely Ironwood (simply based upon the weight of the wood). Both are heavy and very dense woods, but Ebony is just a bit heavier than ironwood. This carving has a loop above the crown of the head where it can hang. All you need is a small screw or nail to safely secure this original African carving. Although I must say, "Used." You would never know that it wasn't made today, it's that clean.

  • Handmade: Yes

    Description

    I have traveled to Central and Eastern Africa on seven occasions. Most of my work has been in Uganda.  But we have also been to Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.  During each of those trips, our team had the opportunity to experience an authentic safari (The only shots being taken were from cameras). The safari's are truly wonderful and take you back to a time that seems largely unchanged, perhaps since creation.  It was upon our return trip from Safari (Queen Elizabeth National Park, in Uganda, not far from the Congo boarder) that we always stop at some of the craft shops along the way.  The hand carved work you see there is among some of the most elegant carvings you might ever witness with your own eyes. .  I have seen some carvings that would rival their European counterparts of generations long past.  What is truly amazing is how little the carvers have to work with.  The tools I saw were very limited.  They were largely hand made knives of various lengths, gouges, small and large hand saws,  rasps (or files), and scrapers that give the extremely hard wood a near mirror finish.  There was not a power tool to be found.  As a lifetime woodworker myself,  I was very humbled by the wonderful work being produced by these men.
    The mask you see in this listing is a tribal mask.  It is a wall hanging mask, not one that could be worn.  That said, the historical masks from generations ago would be worn fully covering the head.  The idea was to bring fright to their enemies.  I think the mask in this listing would do exactly that; it is quite frightful.
    I also have another African mask from the Congo that is a full mask, that could be worn upon the head.  It is equally frightening.  That mask is also posted on Ebay, in a separate listing.
    I will package this mask with great care for shipping.  Depending upon the delivery location, shipping will be by: USPS., FedEx., or UPS.  At this time I am shipping throughout the lower 48 states.
