African TribalPower Figure (Nkisi Nkondi), Kongo peoples Kongo African Art-16.5/10.5 CM
Sacred medicine and divine protection are at the heart of the faith of the Congolese people (Democratic Republic of Congo). The Congolese believe that the great god Ne Kongo descended from the sky the first sacred medicine (or Nkisi) in a clay jar that stood on three stones or a termite mound. nkisi (plural: minkisi) is loosely represented as "spirit", but is depicted as a vessel of divine matter activated by supernatural powers that can be summoned into the physical world. Visually, these minkisi can be as simple as pottery or containers containing herbs and other elements found to be beneficial in treating physical ailments or relieving social ailments. In other contexts, minkisi can be represented as small bundles, shells, and carved wood figures. Minkisi represents the ability to "contain" and "unleash" spiritual powers, which can have both positive and negative effects on the community.
