The goros are a Mandinka population. Gouro masks are aesthetically very close to Baoulé masks. We can note a notable difference in the hairstyle, always very present and dressed among the Baoulé and non-existent among the Gouro, here represented by horns. Tusks and horns are also signs of power and virility. These masks are more than popular masks, they are the masks of the people. Often made of wild rubber, they are smoked before carving to avoid any subsequent deformation. Provenance: collected in situ during a research campaign near Zuénoula, in 1958, by Alpha Baldé, antique collector in Conakry.
