Description
Dogon masks using a figure with his face in his hands may represent shame or remorse but I wonder if this rare Bete mask conveys the same emotion. Usually the horn- or finger-like extensions on these war masks are highly stylized and not really recognizable as anything real. Peeking out from behind human hands with fingers interlocked are nearly obscured bulging closed eyes with a set of three-hole "eyes" beneath them allowing the wearer to see. The mouth is slightly hidden by its hands which are the unusual focus of this sculpture.Incredibly and masterfully this extraordinary work is carved from a single piece of wood!
Attached around the chin area is a long, full ruff, or beard, of hair. Heavy and bulky, it must be very difficult to wear. The wooden portion is about 17" tall; the ruff adds another 8". I consider this a masterpiece of carving, really of African art. I am going to list the shipping cost high since it is so big and weighty
but I always refund any overage paid.
If you have an advanced collection this could certainly be your centerpiece.
Parted with reluctantly, I must sell everything.
U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
