    Description

Antique Meissen Hand Decorated Watteau Courting Scenes Four Panel Pink Gilt Square Serving Dish.
This Meissen German porcelain serving dish has two panels with hand painted courting scenes and two with hand painted floral panels over a pink background. Measures 9" (23cm) Square Width, 12" (31cm) corner-to-corner, x 1-5/8" (4 cm) Depth. Crafted In Germany.
This piece is marked on the back with the 'Crossed Swords' blue painted Meissen maker's mark that was used from 1815 until 1924 (see photos). Note that there are two scratches at the Meissen mark which could mean this was a designated a factory second. It is a bit confusing as the scratches are parallel to one of the 'sword blades' and not across and perpendicular to them. The back corner also has an impressed mark of '93'. Please see the photos.
Meissen used a variety of factory and maker’s marks from its inception, but the famous crossed-swords didn’t become the official Meissen mark until 1722-23. Since 1722-23, and to this day, the crossed-swords Meissen mark has always been a hand-painted blue under-glaze mark. And they have officially undergone several variations. Note: These crossed-swords marks are some of the most imitated and faked marks ever used. So while they can be indicators in the authentication process, they are not guarantees of authenticity. Accordingly, I do not provide any guarantee of authenticity.
