    Description

I don’t know much about African culture so I will just describe what I can with this headdress. I have had it for about 25 years. I purchased it from a collector of African art. This beaded headdress measures about 12 1/2 inches tall and 14 inches across from outside ear to outside ear. It is a “Hat” with an animal on top.
The headdress is covered almost entirely with beads of various colors. It has a brown cloth covering around the top and bottom that could be animal skin but I think is cloth but I really don’t know. The top has a black covering that resembles hair. Based on the wear to the inner surface it has clearly been used and worn over time.
The colors of the beads are remarkably bright and in good condition. There is some very very minor missing beads (primarily behind one ear) but it is so very minor that it is hardly worth mentioning. The beadwork is spectacular and I’m sure was intended for high ranking tribe members to wear.
I am not sure just what the animal might be on the top of the headdress or what it signifies.
UPDATE: I have had advise that this headdress is not Yoruba but is a Beaded Bamileke Hat. I am researching but thought it would be right to pass this input along.
