A striking African tribal Kifwebe mask, produced by the Songye peoples, early 20th century. The wooden mask of powerful abstract form, the median crest on the head becoming a triangular nose, the two eyes of coffee-bean form, the rectangular mouth with typical X-shaped cavity. These so-called Kifwebe masks are amongst the most striking of all African masks, with their thrusting forms and profuse geometric decoration. They were produced by the secret Kifwebe society, charged by the Songye and Luba with guarding secret knowledge. The masks have meaning, white representing purity and tending to be found on female masks such as this.
