The Chokwe people, known by many other names (including Kioko, Bajokwe, Chibokwe, Kibokwe, Ciokwe, Cokwe or Badjok), are an ethnic group of Central and Southern Africa. They are found primarily in Angola, southwestern parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa to Lualaba), and northwestern parts of Zambia.
The Chokwe believe in a higher spiritual power called “Nzambi” who created the world. Masks and carvings are a way to represent ancestors and guardians among them is Mwana Pwo, a female ancestor typically represented in shells, earrings, braided hair and a textured/patterned face.
Please note these are traditional/old masks. Imperfections are to be expected such as dings and minor cracks. We do our best to showcase the mask using as many photos as possible. Mask is in excellent condition.
