    Description

This a splendid perfectly typical Mambila dog mask from either Nigeria or Cameroon. Topped with horns (or ears) over its brow (or ears), and with popping eyes and huge gaping snout/jaws, it presents an almost comedic countenance. Retaining some white and red color, it is mostly black/dark brown. Meant to be worn atop the head, there is a fiber cushion around the rim of its opening. There is an old tag on it that says "AFRICAN ARTS (MAGAZINE) AUTUMN 1994 PAGE(S) #42 + ILLUST. #43" on one side and "MAMBILA SUAGA MASK NIGERIA REF.>" on the other. I believe it is authentic and old, collected by someone in the Peace Corps (1960's).
