    Description

This is a small, very delicate
    old
Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask from Angola or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has an aged worn patina with some remnant kaolin around the eyes and cheek bones. The forehead is detailed with many shallow drill holes around a central
    Cingelyengelye.
The face is depicted with sagging eye bags and puffy squinty eyes, a slender long equine nose with drilled nostrils, a strong brow, and a mouth with lips barely parted (often with these Pwo masks the mouth is more open revealing sharpened teeth). There is a stable split in the wood from the chin to under its nose. Several attachment holes are torn out from use. The "hood" that would cover the back of the wearer's head is perfectly intact, comprised of cord, hair and raffia
stitched to a cloth band. It is an
    exquisite
object. The wooden portion of this mask is only 7" x 5". U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
