Hand Carved Wood Metal African Tribal Mask - Ghana.
Please note, I am not a historian. I have researched this piece and the information below is my interpretation- NOT fact.
This is a beautiful sculpture. I believe it is a woman - I could be wrong but she has a very feminine quality to her and she is very beautiful and elegant! Of course men can be elegant but I have a strong feeling this may be a woman.
Her head is tall and pointy, I’m thinking she could be wearing a head piece, like a crown or a pointy hat, or a head scarf however, I also wonder whether she is supposed to represent head elongating in Africa, however I think that if it were, then the top of her head would be more rounded. So with this in mind I think she is wearing a headpiece.
I don’t believe it to be a hat to represent fertility as from my research, fertility was represented by more of a disk shape headpiece.
She gives me a regal vibe so perhaps she is a queen, or high priestess.
She is hand carved out of wood and then the artist added fine metal on top that they banged out with tools to make a pattern. Then once the metal was applied, they added patina.
She appears to have a signature on her neck but I cannot make it out.
She does have some wear that is commensurate with age and use but nothing that takes away the beauty or integrity of the piece.
She is 14” tall.
