    Description

This is a VERY BEAUTIFUL traditional mask from the Guro people of Cote d'Ivoire in western Africa. Painted colorfully with a bright red face, black detailed scarifications, a multi-colored cap or scarf topped with an elaborate hairdo flanked by white ram's horns, the entire mask serves as a support for the extra fine and folky superstructure sculpture of a mother doing her daughter's hair. Insanely, this is all carved from a single piece of wood. Both figures sit on typical African low stools upon a platform upon it's head. The tableau itself stands about 8" tall while the rest of this fantastic piece adds another 10 1/2" in height. Though later in the last century and very likely made to sell, its attractive quality is obvious. And the work is traditionally done by a talented artist. There is a large divot out of the bottom left rim edge, possibly split from the attachment hole there, but this is hardly visible when viewed from the front. I hate to let this one go but I have to sell
    everything!
