    Description

For sale is a Hemba mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (when it was carved, just
    Congo
). This is a fine mid-20th century example of the mask called "Mwisi Gwa So'o" or "Soko Motu" in the indigenous language. It was well made and much used so has developed a deep layered glossy patina. These masks actually apparently caricature monkeys or chimpanzees. I don't know exactly how they were used since most are quite small. This one is only 9 1/2" tall. It has a very small circular centered depression at the top, like a miniature crater, with a tiny pinhole in the middle. I don't believe this is a remnant from some attachment (like a feather) because no other Soko Motu masks have one. The expression on its face is entirely typical. U.S. buyers please.
