A near pair of Grebo masks, each with 9 protruding eyes. The slightly smaller mask on left is actually an older, early 1900’s piece and a much heavier item. The right piece is an authentic piece too but made in the 1940’s and made from a lighter wood. Very expressive and stylized open mouths on each mask. These abstract masks are a conversation piece indeed. From Liberia they were used in war battles to instill terror and used in ceremonies beforehand, and for dead warriors, or ancestors. They are shrouded with mystery. Great abstract art to add to both a modern or traditional room. Bought at Richard Siegle estate sale in 2011. He is deceased and was ardent collector and dealer in authentic Tribal Art. Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS.
