Description
Here is an old worn and danced
helmet mask from the Makonde people of Tanzania (or Mozambique) with an interesting cloth and fiber stuffed collar or cushion for comfort. It is nicely detailed with dark contrasting raised scarifications, dark contrasting ears and lips and skull top. The hair, sometimes consisting of actual inlaid human hair on some masks, is represented by a raised geometric patch atop the head. The eyes and sharpened teeth are white kaolin but the pupils are all but lost, probably due to repainting. This is a very fine and powerful version of a Lipico mask, mid-20th century. It is about 10" x 8" x 8" and will
just
fit in a USPS large flat rate box for .50. I don't think you're going to find much of a better example than this. U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
