Description
Here is a terrific Dan Bassa mask, probably from Liberia. The surface patina is really wonderful, deep and untouched. With finely articulated features, it is an object of beauty - not one of the many gruesome masks western Africa is known for. It shows exemplary carving skill and an interesting polka dot finish. Some of the attachment holes have torn out from use. It does have one central flaw which I can't explain. Some impact to the forehead has left a spidery crack with a hole that goes all the way through (photo #10). Masks are often flung down after a masquerade dance and it may have hit a rock or something but more likely a nail or sharp tool has been driven in and removed. This is not a fetish piece so a single nail makes no sense. Anyway, it is part of the history of this artifact and adds to, rather than detracts from, its acquired condition (to my way of thinking). Its size is 10" x 7 1/4" x 4 1/4". U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
