    Description

This mask was created by an artisan of the Dan people of Liberia and Ivory Coast. The mask is a beautiful piece of mixed media art: carved wood and tooled metal, with three different metal colors. It is in excellent condition. It has four tooled silver and brass colored metal pieces on the face, and twisted copper wires edging two of the silver colored pieces. It measures 18” tall, 5-3/4” wide, and 2” deep. It has a bird’s head with a long beak finishing the top of the head. A wonderful, exciting, and unique Dan mask. See the pics. PayPal only. No international shipping.
The Dan people are from northwestern Ivory Coast and neighboring Liberia. The Dan lived in small villages and towns, ruling themselves through a complex arrangement of family lineages,
    secret
men’s societies, and initiation ceremonies. Famous for their masks, the Dan believed that spirits, known as Du, live in the untamed forests. They manifest themselves to humans in masks and masquerades, guiding and sustaining the Dan in their lives.
