    Description

This carved and painted tribal wooden shield / mask is 13 inches across and 12 inches high. The sides are uneven - 1 1/4 inches at the highest.  There's a raised carved partial face which centers a slightly raised star shape in black. This was from a varied collection of masks with no provenance. I'm guessing it's from Africa, but don't know where or when it was made or by what group. It was most likely made as a craft, not as an authentic piece for rituals or dances. The paint is crackled and chipped with the wood under it exposed and worn in places. There are 3 holes on each side near the edge. They go through to the back, and 2 have ben partially filled in. They  likely held feathers or something else that dangled from the front, though they could have also attached the piece to something else. The eye openings have some jagged pieces of wood on the edges. The back is unevenly carved with a few gouges. I know that these pieces are often aged on purpose, but the cobwebs on the back are real! There's a small rusty nail to the right of center on the back with a small hook, but it will need new hardware to hang.  Whatever its origin it has a great look.
