Yaure tribe wooden mask
* Yaure is a sub-tribe of Baule tribe of the
Ivory Coast of Africa.
* Mask is said to be a portrait mask used in
commemorating the dead.
* Carved wooden mask 18 1/4" high x 8" wide
x 3 5/8" deep.
* Black except for the red lips.
* Elegant well-polished look.
* Elaborate hair dressing.
* Scarification beauty marks below nose and
across forehead then down toward mouth.
* Four semicircular red areas inside with the
remaining area brownish black. Red is from
powder of the cam wood.
* Holes around the inside lip on back for
attachment.
* Chiseled appearance under nose
* Some wear evidence along edge on back as seen in photo.
